Advances in global health are likely to originate from consortia of researchers working together, sharing data, tools and knowledge. The Informatics Training for Global Health (ITGH) funded by the Fogarty International Center  (www.fic.nih.gov) fosters scientific progress through training personnel who will not only be capable of applying, but also developing, new informatics technology. The ITGH training areas encompass Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Imaging Informatics, and Health Informatics.

Our ITGH program has put together a team of faculty in different domains of biomedicine from leading US institutions - Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology - whose faculty are very enthusiastic in joining efforts to improve informatics training in Brazil.  Due to its acknowledged education and research role in Brazil, the University of São Paulo represents the main collaborative branch in Brazil, although collaborating faculty are also drawn from other universities.

The ITGH program provides for individuals carrying out research projects in Brazil to get limited assistance or complement some aspects of their research through international cooperation. Support is provided to promote short exchanges of collaborating faculty, who also can select trainees to receive support for activities such as presenting papers in conferences and completing short internships in collaborating laboratories in the United States . ITGH may also promote scientific events in Brazil, for example, by providing support for traveling expenses of invited speakers or printed materials such as conference proceedings. ITGH trainees constitute Brazilian researchers who are innovative, highly skilled, and completely acquainted and committed to the local research community. ITGH program candidates should contact their local advisors for more information.
